Bowed Instrument Maintenance
Precision adjustment and professional care for violins, violas, and cellos, designed to perfect the natural resonance and playability of your instrument.
The maintenance of a bowed instrument is far more than simple repair; it is a process of sonic fine-tuning. An instrument that is not optimally set up not only hinders musical expression but can also suffer long-term structural damage to the body due to incorrect tension ratios. In our Graz workshop, we focus on the physical balance between string tension, bridge curvature, and fingerboard angle to ensure an effortless playing experience for the musician.
Whether it is a student instrument for music students at the KUG or a valuable collector's piece, every instrument possesses its own unique acoustic signature. By precisely correcting the bridge and optimizing the nut, we release untapped overtones and improve intonation across the entire fingerboard. We combine traditional luthier methods with modern precision to preserve the integrity of the wood while meeting the rigorous demands of contemporary playing techniques.
The Instrument Optimization Process
Acoustic and Physical Analysis
We begin with a comprehensive diagnostic. We examine the stability of the bridge, the height of the string action, the condition of the varnish, and the fingerboard for any signs of cracks or wear.
Geometry Correction
Depending on the needs, the bridge is precisely fitted or reshaped. The nut is optimized to ensure a clean response of the strings in the first position and accurate open-string intonation.
Sonic Fine-Tuning
Following the mechanical adjustment, we perform an acoustic test. We check the resonance and the balance between the strings to create a homogenous and balanced sound image.
Final Inspection and Handover
The instrument is finally tuned and checked for stability. You receive a detailed report of all work performed along with specific recommendations for long-term care.
Who is this service designed for?
Our maintenance services are aimed at a wide spectrum of musicians in Graz and the surrounding region. In particular, students of music academies who require perfect intonation under high time pressure benefit from our efficient turnaround. We also support professional orchestral musicians whose instruments require regular revision due to intensive daily use. Additionally, private collectors who wish to prepare their instruments for storage or bring them back to playing condition after a long hiatus are in expert hands with us.
How the workshop collaboration works
The process begins with an appointment for instrument drop-off. In our climate-controlled workshop, where humidity is kept constant between 45-55%, your instrument is stored securely. We first conduct the free diagnostic as defined in our business rules. Based on this, we create a detailed cost estimate. We only begin the work after your explicit approval. Throughout the process, the instrument is handled with the utmost care; we use soft supports and avoid any unnecessary contact with the varnish.
What you should prepare for the appointment
To make the maintenance as efficient as possible, we ask that you bring the instrument in its original case. If you have specific preferences regarding string brands or a particular string tension, please inform us during the drop-off. If the instrument already has known defects (e.g., a slightly loose bridge or worn bow hair), a short written note helps us accelerate the diagnosis. Please do not bring loose spare parts unless they have been explicitly agreed upon with us in advance.
The Result: What you receive upon collection
You will receive your instrument in a technically flawless condition, optimized for maximum playability. Along with the instrument, we provide a written work report documenting every step taken. You will also receive individual care instructions tailored to the condition of your specific instrument. Upon request, we provide before-and-after photographs of the adjustments (such as bridge curvature) so that the changes are transparent and verifiable.
Timeframes and Deadlines
The average processing time for a standard maintenance service is approximately 4 days. For a complete overhaul, this period may vary depending on the complexity of the necessary corrections. We prioritize precision over rushed results. As soon as your instrument is completed, we will notify you immediately. Please note that we can store instruments in our workshop for a maximum of 14 days after completion before a storage fee applies.
Scope of Work: What is NOT included
Our maintenance covers technical adjustment and care. It does not include extensive restorations of major wood fractures or complete refinishing of the instrument. In accordance with our guidelines, we do not perform any work using materials from protected species (e.g., ivory or Brazilian rosewood) unless valid CITES documents are provided. Additionally, the costs for new strings or bow hair are not included in the labor fee and are billed separately based on the materials used.
Pricing and VAT
Prices for our services are presented transparently. The amounts listed in the table include the statutory Austrian VAT of 20%. For commercial clients (B2B), we provide the net amount. Final billing is based on the services actually rendered, with the prior cost estimate serving as a binding guideline. Payments for B2B customers are due within 30 days of invoicing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should a bowed instrument be maintained?
We recommend a professional check-up at least once a year, ideally during the change of seasons, as wood reacts strongly to humidity. Professional musicians should consider more frequent visits.
Is the diagnostic really free of charge?
Yes, the initial analysis of your instrument in our workshop is free. We then provide a transparent estimate before any actual work begins.
What happens if I am not satisfied with the adjustment?
We provide a 6-month warranty on our performed work. If the adjustment does not meet your requirements, we will correct it free of charge within the warranty period.
Can you maintain very old or antique instruments?
Yes, we welcome historical instruments. In such cases, please bring all available documentation regarding materials, especially if protected woods were used.
