The Interaction Between Wood and Humidity
Guitars are crafted from tonewoods calibrated to a specific moisture content. In our Graz workshop, we maintain a strict climate control of 45-55% humidity, as this is the ideal range for most instruments. When relative humidity drops below 40%, the air extracts moisture from the wood. The result: the wood shrinks, the tension of the strings exerts more pressure on the body, and in the worst cases, hairline cracks appear in the soundboard or the finish.
Conversely, excessively high humidity causes the wood to swell. This can raise the action (string height) and negatively affect the instrument's intonation. Regular check-ups are therefore not just a matter of sound, but of preserving the instrument's long-term value.
The Hazards of the Heating Season in Austria
In winter, the dry heating air common in Styrian apartments is a critical factor. While the outdoor air is often damp, indoor humidity drops drastically. Many musicians only notice something is wrong when the frets start to "protrude" from the sides of the fretboard—a clear sign that the fretboard has shrunk.
To prevent this, we recommend using humidifiers inside the guitar case. These release moisture in a controlled manner and buffer extreme fluctuations. It is important not to overdo it, as over-humidification can be just as damaging as dryness.
Practical Seasonal Care Checklist
| Action | Autumn/Winter (Dry) | Spring/Summer (Humid) |
|---|---|---|
| Humidity Control | Use case humidifier | Ventilation, optional dehumidifier |
| Storage | Away from radiators/heaters | Avoid damp basements |
| String Action | Check for too low action | Check for too high action |
| Fretboard | Targeted lemon oil treatment | Minimal oiling |
When is a Professional Setup Necessary?
A simple string change is often not enough to correct the effects of a seasonal shift. If you notice that your guitar suddenly buzzes or the strings feel too high, a professional adjustment is required. During this process, the neck angle is precisely adjusted and the bridge is optimized.
In our workshop, we offer a comprehensive Guitar Setup and Adjustment. We analyze the geometry of your instrument and adapt it to the current conditions, ensuring you maintain optimal playability throughout the year.
The Role of Fretboard Oil
In very dry air, the wood of the fretboard can become brittle. A high-quality, specialized fretboard oil can help seal the pores and protect the wood. However, caution is advised: too much oil can soften the wood structure. We recommend treatment a maximum of twice per year, ideally during the transition from winter to summer.
Combined with professional fret polishing, this ensures that the hand glides easily while fingering and the strings remain stable in their position. This is a core part of our premium maintenance services.
Transport and Short-Term Climate Shocks
Transporting an instrument between different rooms or cities can cause significant stress. After transporting your guitar, do not open the case immediately; instead, allow the instrument to acclimate for about 15 to 30 minutes. This prevents thermal shock to the wood and the varnish.

Summary: Prevention Over Repair
An instrument kept in a stable environment retains its tonal character and structural stability for decades. In Graz, we provide the expertise needed to prepare your instrument for the coming months. Whether it is an acoustic or an electric guitar, the physical laws governing wood remain the same.
If you are unsure how your instrument is reacting to the current weather, we invite you to a diagnostic session in our workshop. An initial assessment is provided free of charge.
